Bloating, Excessive Gas & Burping: Uncovering the Causes and Treatments

What Is Bloating?

Bloating involves excessive gas and abdominal swelling, causing fullness and discomfort. It results from swallowed air and stomach gases. Persistent bloating occurs if excess gas isn't released.

Causes:

  • Eating large meals or quickly

  • High-fiber or sugary foods (beans, onions, broccoli)

  • Swallowing air while eating/drinking

  • Stress or anxiety

  • Food intolerances/allergies (lactose intolerance)

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

  • Eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia)

  • Certain medications (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories)

What Are the Symptoms of Bloating?

The main symptom of bloating is a feeling of fullness and tightness in the abdomen. Additional symptoms may include:

  • Belching

  • Nausea

  • Abdominal pain or cramps

  • Flatulence

  • Loss of appetite

How Can Bloating Be Treated?

Treat bloating by improving diet and eating habits, reducing gas-producing foods, and avoiding carbonated drinks. If serious, medication may be prescribed for underlying conditions like IBS, reducing inflammation, and improving digestion.

How to Relieve Bloating?

  • Eat slowly and chew thoroughly

  • Avoid carbonated drinks

  • Limit gas-producing foods

  • Exercise regularly

  • Stay hydrated
